Joan Oliveros Taylor
Joan Oliveros Taylor is a heritage native, able to trace her lineage back to the Minorcans that came to St. Augustine in 1777 to escape harsh conditions working on a plantation in New Smyrna. In 1967, this heritage gave her the opportunity to reign as Princess Margarita Theresa over the St. Augustine Easter Events. She later married Colonel Dan Taylor and they were married for nearly 50 years. In that time, they had 4 sons and 1 daughter that have now given her 11 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. In 1985, Joan was chosen as Queen Mariana for that year in the St. Augustine Easter events. She sang at the Cathedral Basilica for over 45 years including volunteering her time to sing at many weddings and funerals. She produced 2 albums in 1981 and 1983. In 1990, she produced a CD with her own songs. She learned to sew from her father and started her own business Taylor-Made Sewing & Alterations that she ran for over 30 years. Joan began to serve on the board for St. Augustine Easter Week Festival Committee and was Treasurer for many years. She was very effective at fundraising, finding donors that would allow us to keep the Easter Parade going year after year. She also volunteered her time to create the Royal Trio outfits for many years and was known as the Royal Seamstress. Her grandsons, Xavier Taylor and Coleman Taylor, have kept the family tradition alive of participating in the St. Augustine Easter events by serving as King Carlos in 2017 and 2021.
